Frequently Asked Questions

How do I capture a website's design?

  1. Open the website you want to capture in Chrome.
  2. Click the StyleSnap icon in the toolbar to open the side panel.
  3. Click « Capture design ».
  4. The first time, Chrome asks you to allow StyleSnap to read websites. Choose « Allow ». It only asks once.
  5. Your design.md appears in the panel. Click « Copy » or « Download design.md », then paste it into your coding agent (Claude Code, Cursor, v0…) with your request.

Why does StyleSnap ask for access to websites?

The side panel stays open while you browse, and Chrome only lets it read the current page when it has site access. StyleSnap reads a page only when you click « Capture design » or « Pick element », and nothing leaves your browser: the extension makes no network requests.

If you refused by mistake, click « Capture design » again and choose « Allow ». You can also review the permission in chrome://extensions › StyleSnap › Details › Site access.

Can I capture a single component instead of the whole page?

Yes. Click « Pick element », then click the part of the page you want (a card, a button, a header). Press Escape to cancel. The file then says it describes one component, not the whole design system.

Which format should I use: design.md or DESIGN.md?

  • design.md — a short, readable brief that works with any coding agent. Start with this one.
  • DESIGN.md — Google's official format. It passes Google's own linter (npx @google/design.md lint) with zero errors and zero warnings.

Choose the format in the « Format » menu. « Machine formats » also gives you CSS variables, Tailwind v4, Tailwind v3, W3C design tokens, a shadcn theme and raw JSON.

What do « declared », « measured » and « inferred » mean?

  • Declared — the website writes this value in its own CSS variables. It is the most reliable.
  • Measured — read directly off the rendered page.
  • Inferred — StyleSnap's best guess among the measured values. Review it before relying on it.

It says « Extraction failed on this page »

Reload the page, then click « Capture design » again. Some pages cannot be captured at all: Chrome's own pages (chrome://…), the Chrome Web Store, local files (file://) and some pages drawn entirely in a canvas.

Some values look wrong or are missing

Check the « Capture warnings » section at the end of the file: it lists what StyleSnap could not read (stylesheets blocked by the website, a narrow window, a third-party widget). Capture with the browser window wide enough for the desktop layout: the side panel takes its width from the page.

If a value is still wrong, tell us which website and which value: that is how StyleSnap improves.

How do I use the on-device AI?

Tick « AI formatting » in the panel. It uses Chrome's built-in model (Gemini Nano), which runs on your computer. The first time, Chrome downloads the model; click « Prepare model » if asked. The AI writes the design intent and names the colors, but never invents a value: every color comes from the page.

If the AI is not available on your computer, StyleSnap still works: the file is then deterministic, and the panel says so.

Where are my captures stored?

Your settings and your last 40 captures are stored locally in Chrome, on your device only, in the « Library » section of the panel. Click « Clear library » to delete them all. Uninstalling the extension removes everything.

Is StyleSnap free?

Yes. StyleSnap is free, with no account.
