Rename?

Smart Rename is a macOS app that lets you
rename hundreds or thousands of files in seconds. It offers 4 powerful renaming rules: Find & Replace,
Sequence, Case Change, and Smart Variables (EXIF/GPS metadata).

What’s the
difference between Free and Pro?

  • Free: 10 files per operation, 1 saved template, all rules available. No
    History/Undo.
  • Pro ($17.99): Unlimited files, unlimited templates, full History & Undo, priority
    support.

Does Smart Rename
work on my Mac?

Smart Rename requires macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or
later. The app is completely optimized for Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) but also works perfectly on Intel
Macs.

Are my files
uploaded to the internet?

Never. Smart Rename works
100% locally on your Mac. Your files never leave your computer. No personal data is collected. See our

one-time purchase at $17.99. Pay once, use forever. All future updates are included.

How do I restore my
purchase on another Mac?

  1. Open Smart Rename on your new Mac
  2. Sign in to the Mac App Store with the same Apple ID used for your purchase
  3. Click « Restore Purchases » in the upgrade window
  4. Your Pro license will be restored automatically

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Apple offers a 30-day refund guarantee
for App Store purchases. Request a refund directly at reportaproblem.apple.com.


How to Use

How do I add files?

There are two simple ways:

  • Drag & Drop: Drag files or folders directly into the app window.
  • Add Button: Click the « Add Files » icon in the toolbar to open the standard file
    picker.

How do I use
EXIF/GPS variables?

  1. Enable the « Smart Variables » rule in your pipeline.
  2. Add placeholder tags to your pattern, like {date}, {camera},
    {city}, or {country}.
  3. Check the Real-Time Preview column to see the results instantly.
  4. Click Rename when ready.

Can I undo a rename?

Yes, if you have the Pro version. After
renaming, simply click the « Undo » button (or use Edit > Undo) to instantly restore the original file names.
The undo history is maintained automatically.

How do I save a
template?

  1. Configure your rules exactly how you want them.
  2. Click « Save » (disk icon) in the template toolbar.
  3. Give your template a recognizable name.
  4. Access it anytime from the Templates drop-down menu.


Troubleshooting

The app can’t rename
some files

Common causes include:

  • Protected files: Some system files are strictly protected by macOS.
  • Permission denied: You need to grant folder access. Go to System Settings >
    Privacy & Security > Files and Folders     and ensure Smart Rename has access.
  • Files in use: Close other apps (like Finder Preview or Photos) using those files.
  • Read-only volume: Ensure your external drive or network share allows write access.

GPS metadata doesn’t
appear

  • Verify your photos actually contain GPS data (make sure location services were enabled on your
    iPhone/Camera).
  • Reverse geocoding (converting coordinates to a city/country name) requires an active internet
    connection.
  • Many older or standalone cameras do not record GPS coordinates.

The app feels slow
with many files

Smart Rename handles tens of thousands of files easily, however:

  • Extracting EXIF data and reverse geocoding GPS coordinates adds significant processing time.
  • Very large batches (100,000+ files) may take several seconds to load into the grid.
  • You can temporarily disable the « Smart Variables » rule to speed up preview generation significantly.

Pro purchase won’t
unlock

  1. Check your internet connection.
  2. Click the « Restore Purchases » button on the paywall.
  3. Completely restart the app (Cmd+Q).
  4. Verify you are signed into the correct Apple ID in your Mac System Settings.
  5. If the issue persists, please contact us.
