Does Smart Rename work on my Mac?

Smart Rename requires macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or later. The app is optimized for Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) but also works on Intel Macs.

Are my files uploaded to the internet?

Never. Smart Rename works 100% locally on your Mac. Your files never leave your computer. No personal data is collected. See our Privacy Policy for details.

How do I upgrade to Pro?

Open Smart Rename
2. Click « Upgrade to Pro » or try to rename more than 10 files
3. Complete the purchase through the App Store
4. Pro features unlock immediately

Is this a subscription?

No. Smart Rename Pro is a one-time purchase at $14.99. Pay once, use forever. All future updates included.

How do I restore my purchase on another Mac?

Open Smart Rename on your new Mac
2. Sign in with the same Apple ID used for the purchase
3. Click « Restore Purchases » in the upgrade window
4. Your Pro license will be restored automatically

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Apple offers a 30-day refund guarantee for App Store purchases. Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com

How to Use

How do I add files?

Two ways:

• Drag & Drop: Drag files or folders directly into the app window

• Add Button: Click « Add Files » to open the file picker

How do I use EXIF/GPS variables?

Enable the « Smart Variables » rule
2. Add tags to your pattern: {date}, {year}, {camera}, {lens}, {city}, {country}
3. Click Preview to see results
4. Click Rename when ready

Can I undo a rename?

Yes, with Pro. After renaming, click the « Undo » button to restore original file names. The undo history is kept during your session.

How do I save a template?

Configure your rules
2. Click « Save » in the toolbar
3. Name your template
4. Access it anytime from « Templates »

Troubleshooting

The app can’t rename some files

Possible causes:

• Protected files: Some system files are protected by macOS

• Permission denied: Grant folder access in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders

• Files in use: Close other apps using those files

• Read-only volume: External drives may be read-only

GPS metadata doesn’t appear

• Verify your photos have GPS data (taken with iPhone or GPS-enabled camera)

• Reverse geocoding (city/country) requires an internet connection

• Some cameras don’t record GPS coordinates

The app is slow with many files

Smart Rename handles thousands of files easily, but:

• Very large batches (100,000+) may take a few seconds

• Close memory-heavy applications

• Restart the app if needed

• EXIF/GPS extraction adds processing time

Pro purchase doesn’t unlock

Check your internet connection
2. Click « Restore Purchases »
3. Restart the app
4. Sign out and back into your Apple ID
5. Contact us if the issue persists
